We mourn the premature death of
The Secretary of the Israeli Society for Treatment and Prevention of Athsroslerosis Dr. Raphael Bitzur.

Dr. Bitzur, born in 1963, was an internationally recognized physician in preventive cardiology, specializing in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

During his illustrious career, initially in the Internal Medicine Department, and later in the Lipid Center of the Sheba medical center, Dr. Bitzur saved the lives of countless patients, from children with metabolic disorders to older adults with cardiovascular disease and genetic abnormalities of lipid metabolism .

Dr. Bitzur was known for his enthusiasm, diligence and devotion to the field of research, prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis.  He made multiple significant and long-lasting contributions to the health of the citizens of the State of Israel.  Recently, he was the leading author of the guidelines for the treatment and prevention of arteriosclerosis in Israel. He collaborated with researchers throughout the world, developing innovative treatments and bringing them to Israel.

Dr. Bitzur was an exceptional physician who was recognized for his keen intelligence and extensive knowledge, but it is perhaps more important to note  that Dr. Bitzur was a sincere and authentic individual with embracing humanity, an extraordinary ability to express himself, and a sparkling sense of humor.   All those who knew him were delighted in his witty conversation, sense of humor, and remarkable charm. Dr. Bitzur was a true scholar, curious, highly educated, and a true renaissance man.

Rafi left behind a huge void, and he will be sorely missed.
