This year started off with the launch of the new IAS website and it hasn’t slowed since. Other notable items from the beginning of this year include:
- Welcoming three new member societies – from Ecuador, the Dominican Republic, and Vietnam.
- Hosting an HoFH masterclass in Doha, Qatar in conjunction with the Iraqi Lipid Clinics Network.
- Announcing five winners – hailing from Egypt, Iran, and South Africa – of the 5th Wael Almahmeed and IAS Research Training Fellowship and opening the call for applications for the 6th year of the award. Submissions will be accepted through August 30.
These activities are a continuation of IAS’ extensive 2023 programming. Among the most notable items from last year were:
- Launching a three-part virtual course on obesity management, recorded in English and subtitled in Portuguese.
- Publishing IAS’ guidance for implementing best practice in the care of familial hypercholesterolaemia in Nature Reviews Cardiology as well as releasing a companion summary resource deck.
- Completing a clinical awareness initiative about approaches for management of statin intolerant patients, including a webinar and related infographic series.
ISA 2024 Oman and the Council of Constituent Societies Meeting
Among the programming planned for 2024 will be the 20th International Symposium on Atherosclerosis in Muscat, Oman. Please share these related opportunities with your members:
- Submit an abstract – for oral or poster presentation in 18 different categories.
- Apply for a travel grant – the Wael Almahmeed Travel Grant and the IAS Travel Grant are both open to health care professionals from anywhere in the world.
- Nominate your candidate for an endowed award – calls for nominations for both the 5th Antonio M. Gotto, Jr. Prize in Atherosclerosis Research and the 2nd Jean-Charles Fruchart Prize in Nuclear Receptors and Atherosclerosis Research are open. Both awards include a $20,000 prize and lecture at ISA 2024 Oman.
In addition to offering scientific programming, sponsored symposia, and cultural experiences, IAS will also host the meeting of the Council of Constituent Societies during ISA 2024. This is the triennial business meeting of the society, where among other activities, the member societies will elect IAS’ leadership for the upcoming triennium. Of note, IAS’ bylaws, a copy of which is provided with this letter, provide for a proration of votes:
“When calculating votes, each constituent society shall be allowed one vote per ten (10) members for which they certified as members when making their annual dues payment. If a constituent society has fewer than ten members, the society shall be allowed one vote.”
The dues paid by November 15, 2024 will be used to calculate the number of votes allotted to each constituent society. Societies are welcome to make a supplementary payment ahead of the November 15 deadline for any additional members gained since the initial dues payment was made. As a reminder, IAS dues are based on the following formula: $3.00 USD x number of your society members.
